Like pioneers of a visionary electronic music, Robert Henke likes to enrich his work with researches on tools and technology while creating his own instruments and taking an active part in the development of Ableton Live, that is currently one of the most preferred software used by musicians. He also gives lectures and taught at the Berlin University of the Arts and as guest artist at the CCRMA / Stanford University. Robert Henke creates multi‐media performances and installations as well as spatial sound performances that were exhibited at the London Tate Modern or the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Rennes Bretagne Airport is located in Saint‐Jacques-de-la-Lande at the South‐Western part of Rennes. From here, airplanes serve 120 travel destinations, by direct scheduled flights or charter ones. It is also the 7th busiest French airport in terms of air freight. In 2013 the traffic was up to 481.271 passengers and 12.100 tons of freight.
During Robert Henke’s residency, that took place from 17 to 20 September 2013, he recorded sounds in several locations of the airport: public spaces, control tower, reserved areas… For his piece he created a soundscape that consists of easily recognizable sources as well as strong and complex transformations that serve as a layer of atmosphere and color in the background. As a result the work is floating between documentary sound art and musical composition. The presentation of that sound postcard within Rennes Airport matched the opening of the 12th edition of the Cultures Electroni[k] festival. On the 8th of October 2012, 200 persons discovered Robert Henke’s work through, presented as multichannel surround live performance.
This residency received support from Rennes Métropole and Rennes Bretagne Airport.
