Pauline Boyer

Mailing industrial platform [Noyal-Châtillon-sur-Seiche]

Pauline Boyer is a sound artist from Rennes and a teacher at the ENSAB, a National School of Architecture. She works and lives in Rennes and she is an artist-in-residence at the Atelier Vivarium.

The Mail Industrial Platform of Noyal-Châtillon-sur-Seiche is mail sorting center. Around 2 million packages are sorted every day by the Ille-eet-Vilaine, Côtes d’Armor and Morbihan departments. More than 400 persons work in this gigantic and automated sorting center. The MIP follows two missions: the gathering, sorting and dispatch of mails in the three Breton departments as well as the receipt of mails from other parts of France and foreign countries, the sorting of those mails and the dispatch towards other sorting centers.

Pauline Boyer visited the mail industrial platform of Noyal-Châtillon-sur-Seiche in March 2013. During the first phase of the collecting, she recorded sounds out of contacts of papers against machinery. The accumulation of sounds makes a sound print of the location and traces the route of the mails within the platform. The presentation of the sound postcard took place on June, 18 2013 at the MIP for the anniversary of the first opening and later on October, 16 2013 in the frame of the Festival Maintenant at La Poste République in Rennes, Rennes city center Post Office.

This residency received support from Rennes Métropole and the Mail Industrial Platform of Noyal-Châtillon-Sur-Seiche.
